A major cybersecurity incident involving the popular learning management platform Canvas has affected thousands of schools and universities worldwide, including institutions in the Philippines.
The hacking group ShinyHunters allegedly breached systems linked to Instructure Canvas, disrupting access to online learning services and raising concerns over the security of educational platforms used for classes, grades, assignments, and communication.
Several universities in the United States reportedly experienced login disruptions and unauthorized messages appearing on their Canvas portals. Reports indicated that more than 9,000 schools may have been impacted by the incident.
In the Philippines, University of the East confirmed that it is actively coordinating with Instructure while monitoring official updates regarding the breach. The university stated that its Canvas Learning Management System remains operational and accessible to students and faculty.
The institution also reminded users to stay vigilant against phishing attempts, suspicious links, and malicious emails that may take advantage of the situation.
